Car Insurance Secrets: What You Might Not Know! Part 3

baddriversDid you know that if you are classified as a bad driver, you might be paying more of a premium on your car insurance than good drivers?  It has been proven that people who are bad drivers usually pay 40% more than people who are good drivers.

So what classifies a person as a good driver or a bad driver?  Well, if you have not been in an accident or you do not have a lot of tickets, than you are classified as a good driver.  If you have been in a lot of accidents than you could be faced with a higher premium, so keep that in mind when you are driving.

Let’s say that are classified as a good driver and then you get into an accident – things happen.  Many car insurance companies actually offer up an accident forgiveness benefit for the first accident – that is something that you want to make sure that you look for whenever you are in the market for car insurance

Car Insurance Secrets: What You Might Not Know! Part 2

cheaper-auto-car-insurance-coveragesThe next thing that you might not be aware of what affects your car insurance is the make and model of your car – did you know that?  You will not get numbers at all from your car insurance company, but they do have a rating system and the system is used to devise what the cost of the car would be and then they factor in all of the theft and safety features with the car.  The cars are generally given a rating of 1 to 27 and the higher the number that your car is, the more your premium is going to be.

One thing that you could do before you purchase a car is going to be looking up your car’s relative risk with MSN Money’s comparison tool.  That way, if you are buying a new car with a rating that is quite high, you can switch gears and get yourself a car that is going to have an affordable premium attached to it.

Or you can search online for some of the most expensive cars to insure and avoid those cars.  Generally speaking, those cars are going to be sports cars.

Lowering Your Insurance Rates: 3

car-insurance-2If you ask if you can get higher deductibles, you can also lower the amount of car insurance you pay. That might sound back-asswards, but just think about the nature of deductibles, what they are and what they do.

You pay your deductibles long before your policy actually takes effect. You can pay lower costs simply by raising your deductibles. If you pay a one thousand dollar deductible, your rates can go down by as much as forty percent! Of course, if you decide to go this route, it is a good idea to set aside a special account which contains the necessary amount of money, just in case you ever have to file a claim.

If your car has low mileage, or if you simply put less than the average amount of miles on your car each year, you can get a discount that way as well. So, car pooling to work or something like that can actually save you a lot of money.

Lowering Your Insurance Rates: 4

car-insurance-1More often than you might expect, bundling your insurance can save you a significant amount of money as well.

For instance, if you own, are buying, or rent a home, see if you can get your home owner’s or renter’s insurance from the same insurance company as you get your car insurance. Usually, all you have to do is buy at least two kind of insurance from the same provider in order to get some kind of deal. The same goes when you have two cars insured by the same insurance provider.

Group insurance can save you money as well. If your employer offers any kind of group plan, then it will be worth it to at least check out the plan. Sometimes business groups, professional groups, and even alumni groups offer such plans too.

Mind, however, you will still need to shop around, but that is as good a starting place as anything else.

Lowering Your Insurance Rates: 2

insurance-2With car insurance, one thing you might want to think about is actually evaluating the cost of insuring different types of cars before you make a purchase. For instance, did you know that it is much cheaper to insure a used car than it is a new car? For that matter, a more sedate, less fancy sedan will be substantially less expensive than, say, a luxury vehicle or a sports car.

At the very least, if you are planning to buy a new car and have a few candidates on your list of possibly choices, call around to different insurance agents or talk to your current agent, to see which model will be the cheapest to insure.

The age of your car can save you money in other areas as well. For instance, if you have an older car, then you may find it far less expensive to get rid of your comprehensive coverage or your collision coverage on that car.

Lowering Your Insurance Rates: 1

insurance-1There are a lot of ways to save on car insurance these days, but only a couple of them are really widely known.  This is a shame for all drivers out there, because you really could be saving a substantial amount on your auto insurance rates — without having to sacrifice the coverage you get.  You will still be entirely safe, you simply will not be paying an arm and a leg to get it.

Naturally, as most drivers well know, you have got to get more than one quote before you even think about committing to any one car insurance company.  However, a lot of drivers out there do not understand the absolute importance of doing this.  Quite often, comparison shopping will be what gets you the best deal and you absolutely cannot forget that.

Now that you understand liability, it is now time for you to understand property damage.  You definitely want to make sure that your insurance policy includes property damage, as you never know what could happen.  This is going to be the total amount that your insurance company is going to pay for any damage that you might cause to any properties.

In most standard policies, the amount is going to be able $100,000 and that is pretty good actually.  However, if you think that you are going to need more than that, you can absolutely up the amount to whatever amount you want … however, usually the insurance company will cap it at about $250,000, so keep that in mind.

The next insurance that we are going to talk about is comprehensive car insurance.  This is where you really need to read the fine print as this is how much the car insurance company will pay for damages to your car.  This coverage will have a deductible attached, so keep that in mind.
